How Justin Bieber Became the Public Face of Copyright Reform
Charles Eshelman/Getty Images A few days ago, we wrote about Fight for the Future, a not-for-profit that started a campaign and website called"Free Bieber," warning that pop star Justin Bieber could face five years in prison if copyright laws were amended. A lot has happened since, so it's time to update.our editor recommends Justin Bieber Is the 'Real Deal' and Will Have a Long Career Says Reality TV Producer'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never' Producer Emphasizes Importance of Social MediaCould Justin Biebers Never Say Never Get a Best Doc Oscar Nomination? Fight for the Future expresses concern about S. 978,which would make unauthorized web streaming of copyrighted work a felony, and says Bieber's freedom is at stake. STORY: Justin Bieber Picks the 5 Songs That Inspire Him The group points out that Bieberbecame famous as a result ofposting covers of popular R&B songs to YouTube, which might be true, but hardly constitutes illegal streaming under the proposed legislation. Here's whyBieber is safe from jail even if the law passes. After the website got attention, the singer's reps became upset over how the singer was being used as a prop.So Bieber's lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letterto shut down "Free Bieber," arguing that the website itself was violating his trademark, privacy and publicity rights, doing things like promising the arrival of "Free Bieber" t-shirts with the teen star shown behind jail bars. Several music artist guilds also have opposed the "Free Bieber" movement, arguing that the proposed bill actually helps artists like Bieber. STORY: Justin Bieber's 'Under the Mistletoe' Headed for Platinum? Sells 164,000 in Pre-orders Fight for the Future retained the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the nonprofit legal advocacy group, which returned fire witha replythatmakes the case that no laws have been broken in the operation of "Free Bieber." The EFF dismisses trademark allegationsbecause it's a political website that makes fair use of the term "Justin Bieber," rejects a privacy claim because "we cannot fathom how this political campaign in any way intrudes on any privacy right your extremely public client might assert," and says there's no publicity rights violation because of free speech. In other words, groups should be allowed to hold up celebrities to make political points. EXCLUSIVE: Justin Bieber: 'With Time Off, I'm Able to Think, Pray and Grow Up' Then, Bieber got on the radio and made statements that make us question whether his reps are really consulting with him on these issues. A radio host introduced Bieber to the proposed legislation -- not really doing a great job, in our opinion -- and Bieber responded that the lawmaker who crafted the bill "needs to be locked up." The law was proposed by Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar. Bieber made the comment as if this was the first time he's heard about these issues. Is he being used as a prop by both sides of the issue? The Norwegian Film This can be a Bigger Success Than 'Harry Potter' and 'Transformers'
It's unofficially Jo Nesbo week at Moviefone! For your uninitiated, Nesbo might be the Norwegian author behind the Harry Hole quantity of books that Martin Scorsese may (but many likely won't) supply the large-screen. He's also responsible for 'Headhunters,' popular within the native country that's already the finest-grossing Norwegian film of-a while and may soon pass 'Harry Potter' being the finest hit in Norwegian this year. 'Headhunters,' of a headhunter trying to seize an excellent little bit of artwork in the mercenary, is approaching 50 million Kroner according to THR, which roughly equals $9 million in U.S. currency. That's greater than double 'Transformers: Dark in the Moon' acquired in Norwegian, and near the $11 million acquired by 'Harry Potter as well as the Deathly Hallows Part 2.' The film has offered 535,000 tickets, 20,000 greater than 'Pirates in the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.' In the event you haven't seen 'Headhunters' yet, don't get worried: Summit Entertainment, the studio that introduced you 'Twilight,' has acquired the remake rights. Try not to believe all you see on the web: She switched to be considered a psycho who killed cheating military males via unknowingly self-caused overhydration.Bloody Mary desired to show Ducky something he'd never witnessed before, and along the way, Ladd demonstrated us something we'd never witnessed before - her range being an actress. Sorry, Geeks: None of Avengers Was Shot on iPhone
After a torrent of reports circulated the news that Avengers DP Seamus McGarvey shot portions of the $200 million Marvel blockbuster with an iPhone, the cinematographer (and especially Disney) rushed to claim he was misquoted by something called the Irish Film & Television Network: “I mentioned that the iPhone and the Canon 5d Mk2 were devices currently used on many Hollywood productions. I used the Canon on some shots on Marvel’s The Avengers movie. Unfortunately, this was edited to read that I shot some of the film with the iPhone. This is not true.” Disappointing, but come on. Cher's Ballroom Blitz: A Low-Key Affair
Cher She's worn plenty of glitter and feathers in her time, but when Cher arrived in the ballroom at Dancing With the Stars on Monday, everything about her highly-promoted appearance was very low key: She wore a simple black dress and muted floral shawl. Her hair was down and unadorned. But everyone was aware of her presence, and she couldn't stay quiet before, during and after her son, Chaz Bono, danced the paso doble to "Gonna Fly Now" from Rocky."She was very emotional," said Chaz's publicist, Howard Bragman. "She was screaming, crying, and saying, 'Why does Chaz have to go at the end? Can't he go sooner?' She had a wonderful time."The producers snuck the icon into the ballroom and seated her in the area facing the judges during the first commercial break. She sat through the rest of the show, getting up only to hug another famous audience member, Donny Osmond, when he walked over to greet her. Osmond, impressed with Chaz's performance, said, "Chaz just bought himself another week."Cher hadn't attended the show earlier in the season because she didn't want her massive celebrity to overshadow her son. Was Chaz nervous, dancing in front of his Oscar-winning mom? "It's so nerve-wracking to be dancing on live television in front of millions of people that having my family there just made me feel more supported," he said. But his pro partner, Lacey Schwimmer, was beside herself after meeting a major movie star. "I am so excited," she said. "I met Cher and she gave me a hug and I got a picture with her. And she said how great [our dance] was. The rest of it I kind of blurred out because I couldn't believe that I was meeting Cher. But don't tell Chaz that, because he gets really weirded out when I go on and on like that about his mom."Chaz and Lacey were thrilled with getting their highest score to date, a 21. "It's my favorite dance by far," Chaz said. "My favorite movie, my favorite theme song. I saw Rocky when I was a kid and I just loved it. Literally, I wanted to be Rocky. I met [Sylvester Stallone] when I was a kid. He came to one of my mom's concerts. It was right after he finished Rocky 2, and I still have a picture of the two of us together. It was a huge, huge thrill."Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!
